My friend Kim’s husband Larry was in a horrendous car accident recently. The picture above is of his completely mangled car shortly after the wreck.
He was stopped in traffic on the Veteran’s Expressway in Tampa in his 2012 Honda Accord when a white van slammed into the back of him going about 50-60 mph.
Larry managed to roll down the window to escape the wreckage and amazingly, he suffered only a broken wrist, a cut on his head and some internal bruising.
I think it’s a miracle Larry survived let alone walked away! The driver of the van was loaded onto a stretcher and taken away by ambulance.
A few days ago, Larry visited a conventional orthopedic doctor in Tampa to get his wrist set in a cast and to be examined for possible skeletal injuries elsewhere.
Kim was with Larry at the appointment and when the doctor asked if they took any supplements, Kim said that she took fermented cod liver oil but that Larry did not.
Kim also told the doctor that despite not taking fermented cod liver oil, Larry eats really well – all the processed food eliminated with organic, local farm fresh meats, dairy and produce.
Orthopedic Doctor Prescribes Fermented Cod Liver Oil for Car Accident Recovery
The doctor then told Kim and Larry how he took cod liver oil every day growing up (he was in his 60’s). He also commented that Larry’s diet would make a big difference to his recovery, by healing more quickly and more completely. He was very supportive of cod liver oil in the diet and said that the Vitamin D would help Larry’s healing.
“Do you really think that helps?”, the doctor joked with them after hearing about their Traditionally based diet. His comment was obviously sarcastic and meant to be supportive of what they were doing.
The best part of the visit was when the doctor actually voice transcribed the results of the examination and his recommendations which included Motrin for pain and fermented cod liver oil for healing!
When Larry said that he won’t take the fermented cod liver oil because it makes him burp, the doctor said, “you’ll get used to it.”
He also typed in these recommendations into the computer as his formal instructions to the patient.
Kim was very pleased that Larry needs to now start taking his fermented cod liver oil – doctor’s orders!
Larry felt great because the doctor validated their dietary choices and confirmed that his recovery would be helped along by their careful sourcing of their food.
Kim’s only regret is that their kids weren’t present to hear the doctor tell Larry to take his cod liver oil!
What a great story! Even conventional doctors are starting to promote and validate the benefits of wise dietary and whole food supplement choices, particularly for car accident recovery and other serious, physically damaging events.

About the burping: I talked personally with Dave Wetzel of Green Pasture about this, and he recommended that I be sure to consume a couple tablespoons of coconut oil along with the cod liver oil (in the context of my breakfast, which is when I was taking the cod liver oil). I think the mechanism is that the extra fat helps stimulate bile production, which helps to digest the cod liver oil. I no longer have the problem. Try it – it works!
Beth
Interesting about adding the coconut oil along with the FCLO. This may be one of the reasons Green Pasture has introduced a combo product with fermented cod liver oil, butter oil and coconut oil. Plus it’s easier to get these good fats all at once.

My husband doesn’t like the fishy burps from FCLO so he adores the cinnamon flavored oil. He takes his dose and chases it with water, never to burp fish flavor again. I’m very thankful that he is open to most of my suggestions about changing his diet for the better as he is a testicular cancer survivor and I admit I worry about him! His favorite dietary changes are the raw milk, farm fresh eggs, and grassfed beef (the good beef). He tastes the difference in quality and understands when I wait for another weekly pickup rather than running to the convenient grocery store around the corner. Now, if I could only find healthy pepperoni for homemade pizzas, I would be in heaven!

Also, taking it at night helps. That’s what my mom does.

Instead of stifling a burp, try opening your mouth instead, allowing the flavor to escape. It works for me!

I purchase pepperoni from Organic Prairie. They have an online store where they sell overstock items for half price. Currently, you can buy 20 – 5oz. packages of organic, uncured pepperoni for $43. It’ great quality, and we love it. I’m down to one package now, and will be ordering again soon.

When I refused a 3rd colorectal surgery both Doctors dropped me ….I explained to them the only medication that was prescribed by them that actually worked was sublingual & ask that they move treatment out of the Gut & encouraged them to develop a follow-up treatment plan that did not involve more surgery. They suggested I call a holistic practitioner. Neither even knew the medication they had prescribed was sublingual. Because of the Article you Published & with the suggestion I reduce my intake I was able to create my own follow-up treatment plan, added Rescue Remedy to forget the pain & magnesium oil spray for calming & reverse the process. After 15 months of screaming pain I finally Recovered. Now whenever my friends tell me their Intestinal issues I automatically rencourage them to move all treatment out of the gut. I believe in the long run this will become a normal treatment option due to the huge number of people who struggle with intestinal issues………….Maybe you could write a book on it!

Our family regularly takes FCLO b/c of how much it has seemed to improve our health.
I just came across this article and I wondered your thoughts?

My husband does experience FCLO burps as well and therefore only takes it occasionally.
thanks for your input

Wow, how can I find a doctor like that!!! I just went to my conventional pediatrician and refused vaccinations for my 5 year old. Shocked, she told me not to let my emotions get in the way of good judgement. She sees another family who goes so far as to have their kids drink RAW MILK! For sure she will be treating this child for listeria in 3 months !!! Oh brother – time for a new doctor!!

Mary, my friend just went thru a ridiculous situation when she did the same thing, refusing vaccinations for now. He fired her! Told her that he couldn’t be her doctor, due to rules that he must adhere to, so she would have to find another doctor! That is just so wrong! I do not understand why some doctors won’t THINK about how narrow minded that whole scenario is, and remember, “FIrst, DO NO HARM.” I also want to mention that my husband has a kidney stone and we called a new urologist in town, who promptly told us they do not take “Self pay.” What? Money is no good? You have to have government assistance or insurance? We don’t want government health insurance. We want to have a reasonable charge for a reasonable service. Is that too much to ask?

I’m not positive but I think in the new Obamacare doctors can’t take both self pay (cash) patients and patients that are in the system. I don’t think that is fully implemented yet by my guess is offices are starting to gear up for it. Some doctors are choosing to take cash only patients so their cost of services is not controlled by the Obamacare guidelines. One of the doctors I read about that was doing this is now charging less than 50% of what he had been for an office call when he was taking insurance. This could be a good thing in keeping health care costs down. This is the way it used to be a looooong time ago before HMOs and widespread insurance. The only problem with this is what happens when the government starts pressuring the AMA to stop licensing any doctor who isn’t in “the system”?

Very inspiring. Thanks for sharing this. A reminder that what we eat DOES matter.
Kim
It was so nice to hear a doctor get excited to talk about nutrition. It just started as a snarky comment by me and then we had a great conversation. I wish he could be our primary care physician!

Wish I’d known this after the car accident I was involved in back in 2008! I broke my ankle, but aside from that I’m sure it would’ve helped rebuild my immune system after all the heavy pain-meds (and tetanus shot) they gave me at the hospital! Oh well, never too late!

wow.. im going to go buy a 2012 honda accord..

Yeah, it definitely protected my husband, but I have to say, we bought a Pilot to replace it. The backseat was no more and it makes me shudder to think someone (like my kids) could have been in the backseat. I’m just now reading these comments b/c it’s still disturbing to me, although we are SO grateful.

Would this also work for a slipped disk injury after a fall?
Sarah, The Healthy Home Economist
The natural, unadulterated Vitamin D in fermented cod liver oil helps reduce inflammation so yes, it would assist with any injury where tissues are damaged and inflamed.
Beth
Also, the true vitamin A is also critical for healing and is quickly depleted in the body due to stress from an accident or illness. True vitamin A (not synthetic, and not beta carotene) is synergistic with vitamin D and both are in the correct ratio in fermented cod liver oil.

That’s a great story! My brother doesn’t like to take FCLO either. He says he he smells it whenever he burps. I just tell him he’ll get used to it. Are some people just more sensitive to it?
