Put down that Tylenol. Did you know that using it only once a month raises your child’s risk of asthma astronomically?
Hang up the phone to the pediatrician’s office.
Don’t touch the analgesics.
You can do this on your own! Fever is not a bad word. It is your friend!
In fact, it’s the mechanism that the body has intuitively designed to cook off illnesses such as the flu, colds, ear infections and the like. And it serves an important purpose because it is the body’s way of curing the illness.
Did you hear me? Fever is the body’s way to rid us of illness.
Then why eradicate the cure by administering a synthetic drug, such as Tylenol, aspirin and the like?
Certainly, we don’t want our child to suffer needlessly, but by employing meds to suppress a fever, we’re chemically forcing the body to stop treating itself with its natural promise of resolution.
What Some (Good) Doctors Say about Fevers
In the words of my all-time favorite pediatric hero, Dr. Robert Mendelsohn, in his book, How to Raise a Healthy Child in Spite of Your Doctor,
There is a common misconception that the height of body temperature is an indication of the severity of illness. Research has shown that more than half of all parents consider a fever high at levels between 100-102 degrees F. And almost all believe it is high if it reaches 103 degrees.
These parents are also convinced that the height of fever indicates how sick their child is. This emphatically is not the case. Knowing the level of your child’s fever will tell you nothing of how sick he is or if the fever is produced by a viral or bacterial infection.
There’s nothing to be gained by measuring its climb and by doing so will only magnify your fears and upset the child. Even a temperate of 105 need not be a cause of concern.
Even Dr. Sears is quoted on his site regarding normal childhood illnesses as saying,
Fevers are not serious. Many parents have a misconception that fevers are a bad thing and a sign that there is some serious underlying illness. This simply is not true.
Fever is a normal and healthy response of the body to an illness. The body’s immune system releases chemicals that raise the body temperature. This is part of the normal infection-fighting process.
Dr. Thomas Cowan MD, presenter at the Weston A. Price conference two years ago, made it clear that fever may be instrumental in warding off the potential of cancer in the future.
He elaborated that every case in which the child is allowed to present a nice high fever, it potentially inadvertently protects from cancer later in life.
I know, I know. It can be difficult to resist the temptation to give children “a little something for that fever”.
After all, we certainly don’t want them to suffer the pain of an ear infection or a sore throat. But, if we understand that the medications of commerce will often cause further affliction in the future, the choice is easier.
How to Use Homeopathy for Fevers
When a fever appears to be debilitating, what’s a parent to do? I reach for one of my lovely homeopathic cell salts…Ferr phos 6x.
It’s the remedy that aids during any inflammation and may help the child get over the illness in a shorter time and step into full bloom again with fewer accompanying symptoms.
Four pills is a dose, regardless of the age of the child, and it can be offered directly into the mouth every 4 hours for as long as the little one is sick.
Once the worst is over, then Ferr phos 6x offered in combination with Calc phos 6x is a great way to ensure convalescence.
This combo is what I call the “finishing touch” to a good productive fever.
The way I have used it for my feverish children is as follows: 1 PM is time for Ferr phos, 3 PMÂ Calc phos, 5 PM back to Ferr phos, and so on.
When used correctly, homeopathic cell salts are not only inexpensive but nontoxic. That means no side effects.
Can you think of any conventional meds like this?
Yeah, me neither.
12 Homeopathic Cell Salts for Fevers
But these little cell salts don’t just stop at fevers.
Ferr phos 6x is also a premier remedy for anemia and frequent nose bleeds.
I’ve used Calc phos 6x for my children’s dental issues such as teeth that were growing in crooked and premature cavities, growing pains, nervousness, insomnia and even fusing of broken bones. (Actually, that was for my father.) My time-tested tips and tricks as a homeopath have allowed me complete freedom from conventional pediatric dependency.
Take Away
In a world that encourages moms to depend on big pharma and its advocates and to feed our families on the fly, homeopathy, instead, celebrate the home, the cuddle of children and just the right dose of information.

Fevers are helping you in most cases, they are killing the bad bacteria in your system. Not many become life threatening so it certainly does make sense. You don’t want to bring down a fever that is your body’s way of fighting illness.
Angelina Shuman via Facebook
Fevers are rarely life threatening. I will let my daughter’s get to 105 before treating.

My pediatrician told me that it depends on the behavior of the child. If a child has a high fever, but is still responding and behaving “normally” (fussy is normal when sick), then the child is ok, but if the child is limp, lethargic, screaming, or otherwise behaving oddly, no matter the fever temperature, then something is wrong and head for the ER.
RWG mom
This is the part that confuses me. My kids always scream/cry uncontrollably or act lethargic when they have a fever. I don’t even bother measuring their temp anymore… or rarely do. However, I start to panic when they refuse to drink anything at all for hours on end…

One of the best ways to aid in keeping them from dehydrating , is to coat the bottoms of the feet and the palms of their hands with olive oil. Its an old European trick that can help in retaining moisture. Another good way to keep them hydrated is to make pop cycles from fresh juice and even toss in some of the cell salts I mentioned above. Some kids will go for something cold. ice chips with fresh lemon and raw honey can also be tried.

Always used homeopathy with my girls cause the allopathic Meds modes made them sicker!

There is not one single reference here. No explaination of what a cell salt is. Obviously it is a salt, what make it related to cells? There is NO explaination of how it works.
Come on. If we are supposed to think for ourselves and we aren’t supposed believe the establishment, do you think you could throw us a little bit of a bone here.
FYI-A google search revealed little else. How can I give these to my kids without having a full knowledge of what they are??
Deb
Christa, not sure how what you are googling, but if you google the recommendations listed for cell salts in the blog you can find lots of info.

Christa,
I wouldn’t give my son homeopathy treatment without consulting a homeopathist first – do a preventative treatment, and then receive some advice for ‘what if’. After our consultations, mine is always available by email for advice at any time of day (well almost) at no extra charge, and the medications are really cheap so it’s easy to justify having them on hand, just in case.
Megan
Sorry, I meant a preventative consultation, not treatment.

I guess you didn’t read my post in its entirety. The details of what, how, when and where are in the free download offer. Space restrictions prohibit getting into the details in a short blog post. As you can imagine, anything worth knowing is worth investigating.
I hope you take advantage of the free download.

Indeed, not only did I offer more info, but I’m giving it away at no charge. The text explains what cell salts are as well as how and when to use them. My offer is in the purple box above.
Enjoy!

I would warn that you do need to take some preventative measures when dealing with a fever, especially in a young toddler or infant. Whether or not you are going to turn to Tylenol or Motrin to lower the fever, or the homeopathic cell salts recommended in this article, you must do the tried and true methods of lowering a fever through the use of tepid baths or cold wash cloths. My youngest son had a febrile seizure that lasted 45 minutes when he was 20 months old. The cause was a high fever. It was the scariest thing I have experienced. I had heard of febrile seizures, but never knew how serious one could be. I think mothers need to know that in addition to giving a homeopathic cell salt, or a commonly prescribed over the counter pain reliever, they must also do whatever they can to naturally to bring a fever down.

What about a 17 day old baby? My newborn recently had 102.7 after having been GBS positive and untreated at a home birth. They were concerned about meningitis and to my extreme dismay, gave him IV antibiotics. We were hospitalized for 4 days due to an extreme respiratory infection that required oxygen and lung/sinus auctioning and respiratory treatments. It ended up being RSV and those antibiotics were unnecessary, which just saddens me so much. I am drinking,y kefir every day in hopes to help recolonized his gut through my breastmilk. But, would you have NOT gone to the doctor with a fever of 102.7 in such a young baby? It is so hard to now what to do… The system scared me to death that the fever could be GBS related. Sad mother~
Diana
Kristina, don’t be sad or feel guilty over the action you’ve taken. You did the best you could with the circumstances you were under. I can’t offer you a lot of information (I’m sure there are plenty of people on here more informed than me) but I heard on the Healthy Life Summit during the Donna Gates presentation that she recommends small drops of cultured juice to help populate a babies digestive tract (not store bought pasturised sauerkraut (etc), but the real deal). Maybe that would help? Or perhaps you could put some probiotics on your nipple prior to feeding? Look into this yourself, they’re just my random thoughts at this point.
Best of luck. The fact that you’re on this site and using kefir means you’re giving your baby a great start and you’ll see the benefits of your actions in the future 🙂

Any baby that is less than 6 weeks old with a fever over 100.4 should be taken to an ER for evaluation-urine, blood work, and an LP. The main concern is meningitis and the goal is to give the baby antibiotics as soon as possible. The reason for this is due to an infant’s weak immune system. If you wait to give antibiotics, you could be starting treatment too late and the result is potentially fatal. This course of action would be taken regardless of your GBS status. I work at a pediatric ER and have seen hundreds of newborns brought in with fevers. The same process is followed for each one.

A high fever in a new born is noteworthy in that it can represent a more serious illness. However, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the fever ought be artificially reduced. Instead, it might mean its time to investigate what the underlying cause could be.
The most important job on earth is in being a mother. Put a LOT of time into learning how to use homeopathy, how to recognize illnesses and how to use alternative treatments. Become well informed and independent hence self empowered. And don’t beat yourself up. Take this experience as your turning point and begin right there.
Get Dr. Mendelsohn’s book, that I mention above and download the free script I offer in the purple box above.

Great post! I don’t have kids, but when I get a fever I do my best to keep warm and encourage it, since my recovery is faster and more complete when I do this. I think that’s perhaps why we feel cold when we have a fever – it’s our body’s way of making us do things to stay warm, rather than cool down.

My cousins 5 month old baby had a fever of 103-104 for a couple days before she took her to see the doctor. He told her its an ear infection and said there is nothing else that will get rid of the infection because it was passed to him by someone. Well, I have 2 babys myself, and I do not use homeopathic remedies for certain reasons, what could I do if my baby has that? If I dont do anything, will it go away? When is the limit to when my baby can still be safe and I take her in to see Dr…who I KNOW will prescribe antibiotics…ugh. Actually, my baby had a stuffy nose and was coughing a little while back, and I took her in. They said ear infection but her ears were not bothering her and no fever, so I didnt bother with antibiotics. Even though the dr told me all sorts of things like her ear drums can pop because of the pressure. I gave her non homeopathic immune boost liquid that was for babies and all natural. She was totally fine. But Im wondering about times when baby has high fever. In my culture people freak out of high fevers. My mom will make me take her in!

If your doctor is still prescibing antibiotics, then its time to find one who doesn’t. Or, of course, you can learn to do this yourself. Interestingly, some pediatricians have decided to not treat ear infections other than offering an analgesic for pain. They beleive that a ruptured ear drum is an acceptable method of completion to ottitis media.
I can’t encourage moms enough to take control of these simple childhood illnesses, hence mimizing long term problems. If you don’t use homeopathy,(although, I can’t imagine why not), then get a hold of Dr. Mendelsohn’s book that I recomend in the text.
Your baby is YOUR responsibility, not your mom’s. Do your homework and then hold to your earned ideals.

Just last week I had a terrible ear infection. I was home all day with a throbbing ear and a fever, I read about different home remedies and the one that worked the best was fresh onion juice… sounds odd, but it worked!!

For earaches you may want to try colloidial silver. It’s very effective, non-toxic and very inexpensive if you learn to make it yourself. Colloidial silver also works on a host of other maladies.

The logic is interesting… “Your baby’s eardrum might rupture [thus causing a hole], so we’re going to put a tube in [make a hole] to drain the infection that the antibiotics didn’t get rid of [and by the way, your child now has compromised digestion for who-knows-how-long].” I have seen this time and again! One winter 18 of twenty 18mo-3-year-olds in our Church nursery class had tubes put in. This is not natural.
Do these babies need probiotics to reduce mucous in their bodies? Moms, look into that one if you feel it’s a possible cause. Is there a deficiency (water? sleep? fat?) or an excess (sweets? contention?) that is causing extra stress that could be addressed?
Natural remedies (even IF the eardrum bursts; a natural precaution the body takes when it is needed; ruptured eardrums heal when the infection clears, just like cut ones do) include (but are not limited to):
-cut a button of garlic in two; place cut side inward over the ear canal (if this freaks you out, try it on yourself first; of course make sure it’s not small enough to go INto the ear canal) and cover with bandage tape to hold it in place.
-Garlic oil (garlic infused into olive oil; stinks, but works) can be used to massage downward from the back of the ear, down the neck. Essential oils like lavender will also work, as will a mullein or lobelia or plantain poultice/tincture/ointment (mullein is a wonder for clearing congestion–lifesaver for mastitis!– lobelia is antispasmodic and offers quick pain relief; plantain is great for clearing infection)
-a drop of colloidal silver in the ear has cured screaming-pain-ear infections in my little ones in less than 5 minutes, with no recurrence; if your little one can keep that drop in by lying on their side for at least a minute, it works best; but sometimes in-and-out is enough anyway.
-Feel the glands in your baby’s neck: you’ll likely find a marble-like hard spot just under the jaw by the infected ear. gentle downward massage or even gentle pressure helps the congested glands to get the signal to move it. I don’t understand it, but I have had results with it, and have friends who swear by it.

For ear aches crush some fresh garlic in extra virgin olive oil. Leave to infuse for a bit (can’t remember how ling but maybe atleast 15 min) Strain, warm the oil in a water bath to body temp and use a pippete and drop into ear. It works for us every time! This is dr Natasha Campbell Mc Bride’s recommendation.
