The Master Tonic is a fermented elixir for prevention, flu, or travel. It is anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-parasitic, and anti-fungal.
The Master Tonic is a must-have remedy for flu season or when traveling overseas. It is potently anti-viral, anti-parasitic, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal. It requires no refrigeration and lasts indefinitely with no special storage conditions.
This post details how to make the Master Tonic and why it is so effective as a homemade, totally natural anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-parasitic remedy.
Note that the Master Tonic is not to be confused with the Master Cleanse.
Who needs Tamiflu with all its dangerous side effects when you have the Master Tonic, with no side effects, in your back cupboard?
I have a friend who coordinates missionaries overseas to third world countries who told me that the missionaries she knows always take this remedy with them when traveling.
The Master Tonic keeps forever, so make it now before you need it!
This tonic is extremely powerful because all the ingredients are fresh. Its power should not be underestimated. This formula is a modern-day plague remedy and can help prevent or cure the most chronic conditions and stubborn diseases. It stimulates maximum blood circulation while putting the best detoxifying herbs into the blood.
The Master Tonic remedy is not just for the sniffles, it has helped to turn around the deadliest infections resistant to antivirals, antifungals, and antibiotics. It can be used in combination with conventional treatments as necessary.
How to Make the Master Tonic
Make plenty as the Master Tonic does not need refrigeration and lasts indefinitely without any special storage conditions.
The healthiest Master Tonic is made with homemade apple cider vinegar brewed with raw honey.
If you don’t have time to do this, then be sure to buy only raw ACV packed in glass bottles. Never buy it packaged in plastic, as the acidity of the ACV will leach toxins into the vinegar.
Prep Tip
These ingredients can make your eyes water and burn while you are chopping and grating.
I put a large cutting board on my (cool!) stovetop and turn on the fan above the range on high. This allows me to chop everything without discomfort.
Minimizing Time Spent
I’ve recently noticed that bags of organic, peeled, whole garlic cloves are available at some health food stores. Using these instead of peeling the garlic yourself will easily halve the time required to make this traditional tonic. It will also prevent your hands from smelling like garlic for 2 days!
Nightshade Allergy?
If you have an allergy to nightshade vegetables, substitute grated turmeric root for the cayenne pepper or double up on the onion or garlic.
Video Tutorial
The video included with the recipe below details visually how to make the master tonic and why it is so beneficial. It is sometimes easier to learn with pictures than words. This tutorial is especially helpful while you are in the kitchen making it for the first time. Just follow along!
Dosage
The dosage for the Master Tonic is 1 or 2 ounces, two or more times daily. Swish and swallow.
Don’t dilute with water if you can avoid it. Mix with food if you have to, but best to take it full strength on its own.
If it makes you gag because it is strong tasting, try stimulating this acupressure point to temporarily halt the gag reflex.
For ordinary infections, a dose taken 5-6 times a day will deal with most conditions.
It can be used during pregnancies and is safe for children (use smaller doses or mix with some honey for children over age 1). Not recommended for children younger than age 1 unless under the advice of a physician.
It is the ultimate food-as-medicine. This traditional tonic is completely non-toxic.
Master Tonic Recipe
The Master Tonic is a must-have remedy for flu season or when traveling overseas. It is potently anti-viral, anti-parasitic, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal. It requires no refrigeration and lasts indefinitely with no special storage conditions.
Ingredients
- 1 cup fresh chopped garlic preferably organic
- 1 cup fresh chopped onion preferably organic
- 1 cup fresh grated ginger root preferably organic
- 1 cup fresh grated horseradish root preferably organic
- 1 cup fresh chopped cayenne peppers or any hot peppers seasonally available preferably organic
- 1 quart raw apple cider vinegar
- 1 half gallon mason jar
Instructions
-
Fill a half gallon glass mason jar 3/4 of the way full with equal parts by volume of the above fresh chopped and grated herbs (1 cup each works well). Wear gloves when chopping the hot peppers.
-
Fill jar to the top with raw ACV. Close the lid tightly and shake.
-
Shake at least once a day for two weeks, and then filter the Master Tonic mixture through a clean piece of cloth, bottle and label.
-
Make sure that when you make this tonic that you shake it every time you walk by it, a minimum of once per day. Remember that all the herbs and vegetables for the Master Tonic should be fresh and organically grown if possible. Use dried herbs only in an emergency.

Recipe Notes
Use only fresh and preferably organically grown herbs if possible as this will make the most potent and effective Master Tonic. Substitute dried bulk herbs only in an emergency if fresh is unavailable.
If one of the ingredients is not available (fresh horseradish is difficult during certain times of the year), then substitute another hot pepper such as habanero.
Fire Cider vs Master Tonic
Fire cider is a very similar immunity-boosting tonic to the Master Tonic. The primary difference is that most versions of fire cider contain honey to mitigate the strong taste.
Fire cider is available for purchase from a number of companies in recent years.
This brand is one of the best if you prefer not to make your own full strength Master Tonic at home. However, homemade is more potent and cost-effective per dose.

Found a link to your page through a friend. Wondered what sized mason jar you use and if it is the be refrigerated while fernenting? Also, can you use prepared horseradish root as I cannot find it anywhere where I live. Thanks!
Sarah TheHealthyHomeEconomist
No, do not refrigerate while fermenting.

Have you looked in your local produce section? I didn’t know my local store had it until I looked anf there it was. Big old dirty looking root. I peeled it and shedded it. Easy.

I was so surprisd this wasn’t mentioned – this recipe is insanely pungent, I had to air out the whole house, next time I’ll make it outside.
If you make it inside, turn on your vent fan, open windows, wear safety goggles and a surgical mask. Seriously made me cry!

Does anyone know if this helps with hormonal imbalances?
In particular PCOS?
I’m sick of drs telling me that birth conrtrol is the answer all the time, all it does is make me super angry all the time and make my periods more frequent ( although I have lost weight while on it)
Thanks
Sarah TheHealthyHomeEconomist
No, it doesn’t.

Hi there you must get shatavari !! It is a wonder herb for hormonal imbalances and eventually helps many things including skin/hair growth/pain/periods etc. I have been taking and feel better already. I also feel more confident and myself! Also when you have tried this you can get yourself on chlorella and spirulina and I always suggest cider vinegar! This can help with hormones alone! It has been known to cure women who haven’t been able to get preggers for years by having just 3 diluted glasses a day for only a few months to a year and have got pregnant!
For the shatavari you want to stick with the powdered capsules and a make you can trust is PUKKA you must make sure they have the right dosage and are organic the ones i take aslo have seaweed, seagreens, spirulina and ginger root which is even better! I also take the spirulina and chlorella in tablet form, you;ll have to have a look online to see which are best maybe check on forums. I would highly reccomend you see a specialist like someone who does ayurvedic medicines so you can be put on the right start and find out your exact individual needs. Don’t go to the doctors they don’t study these things like ayurvedic “life knowlege” and even if they do they would not have the time or be aloud to help you with it unfortunately. ….You can be better 🙂 good luck

Oh, I know cider vinegar isn’t said to be useful for hormonal imbalance but that is not the point. For any part in or out of your body you have to start with the bottem line of your health which is acidity and alkaline balance (your diet) and if this is not in balance then it will be a chain reaction throughout your body to create dis-ease. So by balancing yourself with cider vinegar first and with your diet, your body will eventually work itself healthy through to your other problems. I have cured stomach ulcers and lots of other problems through diet alone e.g raw cabbage juice aloe juice and stopping drinking milk.
I seriously urge you to look at diet first and to not take any drugs the doctors give you to always look for thew natural alternative, as they were given to us on this earth to use and we, after all are made from organic material. 🙂
Take care
Ellen
Look into iodine (iodine/iodide combo)…cysts on thyroid, breasts, ovaries….all must have iodine. Dr. David Brownstein book, videos on youtube.

I live in Costa Rica and can’t get horseradish, any thoughts (like wasabi powder?) I just found this article and am very interested in this. I just started a round of antibiotics for severe respiratory infection. I want to make this tonic, as I would so much prefer this over the Meds. Am also concerned with keeping my gut healthy, so any recommendations would be appreciated.

Ask your local grocer to special order you some fresh horseradish and then you will be able to make some. That is what I did, my produce man was more than happy to order it for me.

I made the Master Tonic on Saturday and it now has a green hue. Is this normal?
Sarah TheHealthyHomeEconomist
Yes, this is normal

1) Does it matter the onion type?
2) After you drain the juice off, do you throw out the dry ingredients, or reuse to make more tonic for a year?
3) Does it matter the pepper type?
Thank you!

Sarah, please let your readers know that it is not safe during the first trimester of pregnancy. Horseradish can cause miscarriage during the first trimester.I just found out tonight after a few days of miscarriage sysmptoms with no previous of family history of miscarriage(this is my fifth pregnancy-I have four healthy wonderful sons). The spotting and gradually bleeding and cramping began after started taking the tonic 6days ago to deal with some cough that was getting us all. I am still cramping and light bleeding lightly and I am praying that God will have mercy on the child and I won’t miscarry, although His will be done, He knows best. Hi Sarah.I thought I would let you know that I did miscarry the next day after I wrote this comment. God alone knows all the details of the pregnancy as I was very early, about 6 weeks, and I hadn’t seen my midwife yet, but all the symptoms of cramping and spotting and eventually bleeding started a day after I started taking the master tonic that I have made from organic ingredients following this recipe.I wish I had connected the dots earlier when the cramping started not after 6 days…anyhow, I took a tablespoon at a time up to 4 a day. In total over the 3-4 days I took it I might have had 6 oz or so of the master tonic. I must have taken too much.I think now I should not have taken any. I had no idea that horseradish can cause miscarriage in early pregnancy. Please let your readers know, it is not safe during early pregnancy! On a happy note I am now 6 months pregnant with our fifth son and pregnancy is going great; Lord willing we will have a home birth with our team of midwives. I appreciate the good info you have on here. I trust most info you offer and I come often to your blog. Luiza

Can anything be done with what’s left when you straight it?

After straining, spread the mixture out on unbleached parchment paper and dehydrate in a dehydrator or in the oven at the lowest temp until completely dry and crispy. Makes a great spice blend.
I only roughly chopped the ingredients and then pulsed them, individually, in an electric chopper. This created a perfect consistency for making the tonic and for making the spice blend afterward.
