DIY method for making an effective, natural toothpaste at home to assist with the prevention of cavities and tooth remineralization for children and adults.
The article which provided compelling before and after photos of remineralizing cavities generated a number of questions from people interested in more information. In particular, people wanted to know exactly what natural toothpaste was used by the Mom who took the dramatic before and after photos.
I emailed Kristin about this and she graciously sent me the recipe she used.
It is important to note that the toothpaste itself was not totally responsible for the improvement in the cavities shown in Kristin’s photos. It was the dietary changes she made as outlined in the book Cure Tooth Decay that made the big difference.
However, when the diet is right, a natural toothpaste that facilitates the remineralization process can definitely help!
So if you’ve got your dietary ducks in order, then worry about using the proper natural toothpaste. But, if the diet isn’t right, no toothpaste, natural or not, will help resolve the situation.
Here is a brief summary of the changes Kristin made to her son’s diet in order to stop the decay and initiate the remineralization process.
In Kristin’s own words:
My son had just turned 3 years old when we took him in for his first dental exam. They told us he had a stain on his front tooth (which they scraped off and it has not returned) and a tiny cavity that they wanted him to come back a different day to be filled with an amalgam.
We scheduled the appointment even though I was very hesitant. I already knew about healing teeth and decided to give it a try. He has a 6-month dental check-up coming up next month and I’m anxious to know what they say. Unfortunately, we go to a “mainstream” dental office so I bet they will be beside themselves.
She then described the remineralization process.
How I healed his tooth:  We were already a paleo family so it wasn’t like we had to cut out grains/processed foods etc. unfortunately he did consume a lot of dried fruits, nuts, and Larabars and fruit leathers as quick snacks on the go.
I was unaware of the high sugar and phytic acid contents of these foods. so we quickly eliminated them. I began to read Ramiel Nagal’s Cure Tooth Decay book and learned a lot!!
We introduced raw milk and cheese, high vitamin cod liver oil/butter oil blend, cell salts, homemade 24-hour milk kefir, bone broth which is hard to get him to drink, smoothies with cream/raw egg yolks/crushed egg shells/grassfed gelatin/trace mineral drops, butter from grassfed cows, free-range eggs, grass-fed/pastured meats and organ meats hidden in his meals.
I cut out all fruit with the exception of 1 serving of berries or cooked granny smith apples in coconut oil (he was a very very big fruit eater). It only took about a week for him to get use to his new diet.
Natural Remineralizing Toothpaste
This summary is fantastic and hopefully an eye-opener for those who really seek to resolve persistent cavity problems in their home.
Now, onto the natural toothpaste that Kristin used in conjunction with Traditional Diet to resolve her son’s cavity issues.
What if you have no desire to make your own natural toothpaste, however? You are just too busy and one more thing to make is just too much?
In that case, I would suggest the company Orawellness, which makes very high quality, remineralizing tooth gel. Find it here.
Ingredients
6 Tablespoons virgin coconut oil or red palm oil (where to find)
1 Tbl baking soda (cheapest brand is fine … all baking soda is aluminum-free)
1-2 Tbl bentonite clay (brand free of heavy metals)
20-30 drops of peppermint essential oil
5-10 drops of lemon essential oil
30 drops of trace minerals (brand I use)
5 Tbl calcium carbonate (where to find)
Filtered water as needed (vetted water systems to consider)
Instructions
Mix all the ingredients well and store in a small stainless steel jar. If the mixture is too hard or thick, add a few splashes of filtered water to achieve the desired consistency.
Adapted from Wellness Mama’s Squeezable Toothpaste Recipe.
Suggested Use
Brush teeth twice a day with this natural toothpaste. Before bedtime brushing, add one drop of Lugol’s Iodine to the toothbrush.
Follow protocol to achieve desired results but be sure to consult with a dentist, preferably holistic, to ensure that teeth are healthy and any problem with cavities is truly improving and not worsening.
Note that the best results are achieved by flossing teeth with ozonated olive oil after brushing. This is the recommendation of holistic and biological dentists. If you prefer a tooth powder to toothpaste, try this whitening tooth powder recipe.
Need a Holistic, Biological Dentist?
I get many requests about who I recommend as a truly holistic dentist. If you are looking for one, I recommend Dr. Carlo Litano of Natural-Smiles.com – (727) 300-0044.
He sees young children as well as adults and does phone consults for those who are out of town. Be sure to tell Dr. Litano that Sarah, The Healthy Home Economist sent you and get 10% off your first visit!

I have tried making coconut oil based toothpastes in the past, and my family loved them and they worked great, but I had one (major) problem with them–they clogged up the sink SO bad.
How do you keep from clogging up the bathroom sink? Other than brushing over the bathroom trashcan (yuck!), what can be done? I even tried the baking soda and vinegar trick to resolve the clog to no avail. Help!!
Sarah TheHealthyHomeEconomist
Have you tried these? We use them in our home and they work great for preventing drain clogs. http://amzn.to/1TqO322

It works for me … one of my kids uses these oil based natural hair products that clog the tub drain, but the hair trap keeps the oily stuff from going down the drain. It collects on the trap and You just wipe it off after a shower.

Hi Sarah
I know this is an old post and I truly hope someone can help me. I live in Europe and it is impossible to buy Trace Minerals (they don’t ship it to where I’m located). I tried Iherb, Amazon and the result is all the same, impossible to ship it.
What can I use as a good substitute?
My son’s top teeth are a bit stained despite the nutrient dense food he has… he is 3 and a half years old now and I’m really worried.
Thank you for your help!
Best Wishes,
Maria.
Janet
where in Europe are you ?

I have been doing a lot of research on heavy metal detox, and learned that bentonite clay has a large amount of aluminum in it, and should be avoided. I used to make my homemade toothpaste with bentonite clay, but now leave it out for that reason.

MYTH: Aluminum in Clay is dangerous.
FALSE. Aluminum is part of the structural make up of all clays. The aluminum in Calcium Bentonite Clay is in a safe oxide form, not the dangerous man-made processed aluminum. The many trace minerals in Calcium Bentonite Clay are fused together into a super compound structure known as a clay particle, which cannot break down and cannot be absorbed by your body.

Hi Sarah. I just wanted to add a word of caution about 0ne ingredient in your toothpaste recipe. Our modern world is full of foods and chemicals that act like estrogen and can disruptor human hormones. I recently read that peppermint oil, as well as lavender and tea tree oils are high in plant estrogens, which could be a problem, especially for young boys. I assume it is there for the minty, toothpaste taste, but cinnamon or some other flavor might be a safer choice.

The cavities could be due to a lack of minerals needed for bone growth and teeth strength that comes from dairy products. Calcium deficiency is common in children with a dairy intolerance. I’m no doctor, but I teach preschool. After much talk with one of my students mothers, she told me a doctor said her daughter needed to have a more calcium rich diet or she would struggle with her bone and teeth strength. Her teeth were becoming translucent and chipping. She is now changing her diet to include calcium in other ways. Not saying to buy the book, just another resource. Hope this helps! If not, I’m not offended. 🙂

Dairy is NOT the answer. We are the most milk drinking cheese eating culture in the world yet have the highest rates of osteoporosis. The problem is animal protein. Meats and dairy are high in protein content, protein is made of amino ACIDS and our blood is alkaline. When we eat foods that make us more acidic, our bodies leach minerals from our bones/teeth to maintain alkalinity. Greens and fruits are where it’s at.
Sarah TheHealthyHomeEconomist
This is because the dairy is pasteurized which destroys the enzyme for absorbing the calcium. I had a friend with osteoporosis eating pasteurized dairy in large amounts and kept losing bone … switched to raw, grassfed dairy and she stopped losing bone and starting gaining bone mass again!

No we aren’t the Swiss are. They even have milk pipelines. The difference is the stuff we (Americans) put into milk and take out of milk. The Swiss only have whole milk nothing else and it’s all organic and natural. If you drink this kind of milk I’m sure you’d notice a difference.

It may not be a calcium deficiency at all (in that there is not enough calcium in the diet) in the students diet. It may be that the deficiency lies in that there is a vitamin D or Magnesium deficiency. When one or both of vit D or magnesium are missing or insufficient in the diet our bodies cannot properly absorb and utilize the calcium that we provide for it. I think is is best that if we are going to change something up then we need to look at all the angles. I know that the standard pasteurized milk in the grocery store is enhanced with D. I still personally won’t drink it as it has too many other ingredients that are not good for us and in my personal opinion detract from the potential good that it supposedly has to offer. The dolomite in the recipe is the perfect ratio of calcium to magnesium for our bodies to be able to utilize. I personally will be looking at ingredients to get D into the articles recipe as well. Just my thought.

I just recently made the toothpaste with all your ingredients but it seems that at the end the oil was coming out of the mixture and it was making some sorts of bubbles on top. Is this normal, or did i make something wrong? I feel like some of the Dolomite powder gets stuck between teeth, is this ok? Also is there a big diference if i have organic coconut oil refined, and not virgin? Thank you again for the information and i hope my kids benefit from better teeth. I have 4 kids and one of them is 4 years old and has cavities in all her teth almost. She hates the dentist so i hope i can save her with this. Just started, march 2015. I will give an update late! Thanks.
Rebecca
I used to have a lot of cavities. I started using doTerra’s On Guard toothpaste. I had a tooth that was bothering me and since I started using doTerra’s toothpaste it quit hurting. Their toothpaste has 6 essential oils in it.
Monica
You wouldn’t happen to sell the stuff, would you?
Katie
I think this is a great post and will be making some!!
After reading through many of these responses one must understand that when ingredients are in there natural state, as in not-man made, have some great benefits- not all things but many. Just like dairy. But our culture has been trained to think that what the USDA says goes. Do your research people…with the great www we have access to see options and make our own call on our families health.

hmmm last time i went to the dentist they told me not to use toothpaste with baking soda in it because it strips your enamel away… baking soda is very abrasive so i cant see that being a good use all the time.
Kirsten
Thank you for this post! My question is: how did your son feel on what I assume to be a fairly low carbohydrate diet? When I have attempted to feed my children this way they complain of feeling tired and hungry. Our normal diet excludes sugars and processed foods and is similar to WAPF style of eating. Thanks for any suggestions!
Sarah TheHealthyHomeEconomist
Most likely ok as the allergenic proteins are not present in butter oil.
Jamie
Thank you, Sarah for all you do! Trying to figure out my 4 year old’s 6 cavities is driving me crazy. A nutritionist suggested maybe I didn’t get enough cal/magnesium/minerals when I was pregnant. I just want an answer so I can hopefully fix the problem not band-aide/fill the cavities. It would be awesome if you had an ideas or suggestions. Thanks again!
Jessica
Why not try ghee? It’s clarified butter and the milk proteins are removed. Pricier than butter, but will give you more piece of mind.
Marisa
You need to consume enough healthy fats with minerals, so that your body can actually assimilate them. 🙂
