DIY method for making an effective, natural toothpaste at home to assist with the prevention of cavities and tooth remineralization for children and adults.
The article which provided compelling before and after photos of remineralizing cavities generated a number of questions from people interested in more information. In particular, people wanted to know exactly what natural toothpaste was used by the Mom who took the dramatic before and after photos.
I emailed Kristin about this and she graciously sent me the recipe she used.
It is important to note that the toothpaste itself was not totally responsible for the improvement in the cavities shown in Kristin’s photos. It was the dietary changes she made as outlined in the book Cure Tooth Decay that made the big difference.
However, when the diet is right, a natural toothpaste that facilitates the remineralization process can definitely help!
So if you’ve got your dietary ducks in order, then worry about using the proper natural toothpaste. But, if the diet isn’t right, no toothpaste, natural or not, will help resolve the situation.
Here is a brief summary of the changes Kristin made to her son’s diet in order to stop the decay and initiate the remineralization process.
In Kristin’s own words:
My son had just turned 3 years old when we took him in for his first dental exam. They told us he had a stain on his front tooth (which they scraped off and it has not returned) and a tiny cavity that they wanted him to come back a different day to be filled with an amalgam.
We scheduled the appointment even though I was very hesitant. I already knew about healing teeth and decided to give it a try. He has a 6-month dental check-up coming up next month and I’m anxious to know what they say. Unfortunately, we go to a “mainstream” dental office so I bet they will be beside themselves.
She then described the remineralization process.
How I healed his tooth:  We were already a paleo family so it wasn’t like we had to cut out grains/processed foods etc. unfortunately he did consume a lot of dried fruits, nuts, and Larabars and fruit leathers as quick snacks on the go.
I was unaware of the high sugar and phytic acid contents of these foods. so we quickly eliminated them. I began to read Ramiel Nagal’s Cure Tooth Decay book and learned a lot!!
We introduced raw milk and cheese, high vitamin cod liver oil/butter oil blend, cell salts, homemade 24-hour milk kefir, bone broth which is hard to get him to drink, smoothies with cream/raw egg yolks/crushed egg shells/grassfed gelatin/trace mineral drops, butter from grassfed cows, free-range eggs, grass-fed/pastured meats and organ meats hidden in his meals.
I cut out all fruit with the exception of 1 serving of berries or cooked granny smith apples in coconut oil (he was a very very big fruit eater). It only took about a week for him to get use to his new diet.
Natural Remineralizing Toothpaste
This summary is fantastic and hopefully an eye-opener for those who really seek to resolve persistent cavity problems in their home.
Now, onto the natural toothpaste that Kristin used in conjunction with Traditional Diet to resolve her son’s cavity issues.
What if you have no desire to make your own natural toothpaste, however? You are just too busy and one more thing to make is just too much?
In that case, I would suggest the company Orawellness, which makes very high quality, remineralizing tooth gel. Find it here.
Ingredients
6 Tablespoons virgin coconut oil or red palm oil (where to find)
1 Tbl baking soda (cheapest brand is fine … all baking soda is aluminum-free)
1-2 Tbl bentonite clay (brand free of heavy metals)
20-30 drops of peppermint essential oil
5-10 drops of lemon essential oil
30 drops of trace minerals (brand I use)
5 Tbl calcium carbonate (where to find)
Filtered water as needed (vetted water systems to consider)
Instructions
Mix all the ingredients well and store in a small stainless steel jar. If the mixture is too hard or thick, add a few splashes of filtered water to achieve the desired consistency.
Adapted from Wellness Mama’s Squeezable Toothpaste Recipe.
Suggested Use
Brush teeth twice a day with this natural toothpaste. Before bedtime brushing, add one drop of Lugol’s Iodine to the toothbrush.
Follow protocol to achieve desired results but be sure to consult with a dentist, preferably holistic, to ensure that teeth are healthy and any problem with cavities is truly improving and not worsening.
Note that the best results are achieved by flossing teeth with ozonated olive oil after brushing. This is the recommendation of holistic and biological dentists. If you prefer a tooth powder to toothpaste, try this whitening tooth powder recipe.

QUESTION: Is the iodine safe to give to a 3 year old? Can they overdose if they already have enough iodine in their diet?
Sarah TheHealthyHomeEconomist
I wouldn’t do it unless my practitioner recommended it and had solid, clinical reasons for doing so.
Mariana

Hi Mariana, please remember that this toothpaste only will be helpful in the presence of a diet that will also support cavity healing. Have you read the book “Cure Tooth Decay”. Not eating sugar is only one piece of the puzzle.

I have braces…..so will the solution still work without problems?

Can I use the recipie in my ebook. I will give you credit
Sarah TheHealthyHomeEconomist
No, I’m sorry. I am not able to give permission for recipe reprints.

Baking soda and calcium carbonate are salts. Coconut oil is a fat. They don’t mix, meaning that baking soda will stay “sandy”. This is Chemistry 101.
Scrubbing your teeth with such a paste will tear away your enamel, like you were using sandpaper.
Sarah TheHealthyHomeEconomist
I’ve been brushing my teeth (not hard of course!) with baking soda mixture for over 10 years with no problems. It is what is recommended by my local holistic dentist who is sought all over the world for consultations and people like Tom Cruise go to see who can afford anyone.

Very useful and extremely thought provoking; we’re keen to understand more deeply; thank you.

I came across your blog while shoofting through Pinterest and as a dentist with a PhD in Pediatric Dentistry, I feel the need to share my knowledge on this subject. Let me just say, I am not trying to ruffle anyones feathers; my job is to help people and give my two cents on dental and oral related subjects. I took an oath after all. Dental caries are considered a contagious bacterial infection that have a multifactorial origin. Caries, or cavities, are mostly caused by bacteria that begin to demineralize the outer tooth structure especially when the demineralizing factors (like a high carbohydrate or sugar based diet, just like you stated) are not eliminated. ‘Baby teeth’ are very porous in nature compared to permanent teeth. Any cavitation that begins (especially in between two neighboring teeth) will have a high chance of effecting the deeper parts of the tooth, most importantly, the pulp or nerve chamber. I don’t have much experience as a practitioner with these types of ‘holistic dentistry’ but I have an abundance of clinical experience especially with young children with lots of cavities. All I can say is, if you think your child has a cavity or you see any kind of discoloration, you should make sure these discolorations are in fact a cavity by taking your child to a dentist. If everyone could diagnose themselves there would be no need for dentists and people wouldn’t have to go to dental school for 10 years. If you go to a dentist and they say there is a small incipient or just formed cavity, then it may be ok to try this essential oil based toothpaste. But if there is loss of tooth structure, or any kind of soft tooth surface, then I do not recommend the use of this DIY. Like I said, the tooth structure is especially porous in kids and when cavitation is added to the situation the tooth nerve may get in danger and infection or irritation can set in. The effect of these essential oils on the tooth nerve is not yet confirmed with evidence-based and long-term studies. Although they do have antibacterial properites and can reduce the count of bacteria in the mouth, I do not agree that ‘holes’ or cavitations can be fixed or healed with these substances or a simple toothpaste. I totally agree with the diet part; this is the first thing we talk about with parents. But as I said, holes in teeth with soft yellow, brown or black discoloration can not be healed. Ä°f it is only superficial, that is another story and I can accept that. But otherwise, it is medically impossible and can only be treated with a filling material (preferably composite and not amalgam).

Also, many “holistic” dentists have lost licenses due to making false claims. And as for Tom Cruise recommending a holistic dentist. I’m sorry, but that man’s cheese slid off his cracker a long time ago!
Rosemary
LOL. Tom Cruise’s cheese most certainly did slide off his cracker many moons ago. lol. But, his teeth are phenomenal. Thanks for the laugh.

I have a couple of questions for you sir. Why do traditional dentist reward their patients with lollipops/candy when sugar is one of the main culprits causing tooth decay? When dentist recommend that their patients eat less sugar why do they not go further then that? There are those that eat too much sugar and then there are those that eat too much sugar forming foods along with those who eat too many acid forming fruits/foods. Additionally, why don’t dentists discuss the calcium, vitamin D and magnesium balance required for our teeth and bones to properly utilize the calcium that our bodies receive? I know this post it a bit dated but, I do hope you reply.
Daniel L.
Hi, I’m a dental hygienist and I can answer a couple of these. Usually the candies given at a dental office are made of either xylitol which has some limited evidence of cavity prevention, or another sugar substitute that doesn’t cause cavities. Only fermentable sugar/carbohydrates can be metabolized into acid, causing decay.
As far as what you said about calcium/magnesium/vitamin D, let’s keep it to teeth. Calcium supplements & calcium rich foods are not effective in preventing decay. Your saliva ALWAYS has a saturation of calcium and phosphate in it. If you had a clinically diagnosed deficiency or condition, you’d have much bigger problems that would have been apparent from birth. Magnesium & vit. D aren’t very relevant to teeth. The things you’re talking about are more relevant to systemic issues. The oral cavity is a vastly different environment.
As for dentists not discussing sugar/diet/etc. it just depends on who you see. I always discuss diet and the sugar/acid cycle with my patients, especially the cavity prone ones.

From what I read, I understood that most of the foods, except the animal based foods, must be cut off. It is too drastic for me. Just like I cannot be a vegan, I cannot be almost completely carnivore. Sorry folks, I guess I stick to my omnivore diet and Ca + multivitamin supplements. I am cutting sugar out anyways.
