When I wrote the post about how to heal a cavity, I had no idea that the post would end up being circulated around dental forums where it became the target of ridicule and even anger from a number disbelieving dentists. The fact is that teeth can and do heal, even those in need of a root canal.
Whether or not conventional dentists choose to acknowledge it does not really matter. Holistic dentists know the truth! For example, Dr. Weston A. Price DDS documented many cases of cavities resolving when nutritional deficiencies were corrected in his book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration.
While I received many negative emails and comments from dentists (I also received a few positive emails from dentists, I might add), I was also delighted and amazed by stories from Moms just like me who had experiences very similar to my own…tooth problems resolving with nutrition or natural medicine alone!
One of the most interesting emails I received was from a homeopath named Kay, who lives in Australia, coincidentally right near where my husband was raised! Kay wrote me the following story which I thought so fascinating that it absolutely needed to be a guest post:
Homeopathy Instead of a Root Canal
Dear Sarah,
My sister who lives in Hong Kong sent me the link to your site after you wrote an article about butter oil and how it reversed tooth decay when taken along with cod liver oil.
I am a homeopath and teach workshops to parents on how to use natural medicine to raise healthy children, so I was fascinated by this piece of information and it prompted me to share another tooth story with you and your readers about how my son was saved from a root canal at the age of 14 years old by using natural medicine.
Jack had been playing golf with his brother over the school holidays and while hot tired and emotional ( a normal state of affairs for my son at the time), his golf club got stuck in the bag. So, with sheer brute force, he ripped it out of the bag straight into his mouth and broke off the bottom of his front tooth!
We went straight to the dentist who did tests and declared the root was dying and that he needed to do a root canal before the tooth discolored. I told him to remove his drill from my son’s mouth and said I would try and save the tooth with homeopathy. A not very happy dentist told me there was a time and place for homeopathy and this wasn’t it and if there was any remote chance I could save this tooth he would send me all his clients.
I took Jack home and gave him homeopathic Arnica for shock, trauma and bruising. Then, I used homeopathic hypericum, a great remedy every parent should know about as it repairs nerve damage. I gave it to Jack every few hours and then reduced it to 2 x day for the next week. In America I believe you can buy homeopathics in health food stores quite easily, so always have arnica and hypericum in your cupboard for “teeth” accidents.
Today Jack still has his original front tooth with a little cosmetic dentistry to build up the bottom half and the dentist still has not sent me one client!
Thanks for letting me share this story Sarah. Just knowing these small pieces of information can create such better health outcomes for our children and families.
Looking for a Holistic, Biological Dentist?
From Sarah …. I get many requests about who I recommend as a truly holistic, biological dentist. If you are looking for one, I recommend Dr. Carlo Litano of Natural-Smiles.com – (727) 300-0044. He sees young children as well as adults. Be sure to tell Dr. Litano that The Healthy Home Economist sent you and get 10% off your first visit!
Another question! My 20 yr old daughter needs her wisdom teeth out – they are hurting her. She is scheduled for Monday. Trying to google and see if there’s natural cures for that. Any suggestions? Is that a necessary thing to do or is there something different we can try???
Wisdom teeth do need to come out in MANY cases. I had a dentist tell me that I didn’t need to have mine out for a couple of years and in those couple of years the tooth grew and caused tons of pain and screwed up the alignment of my teeth. I would highly encourage taking them out if the dentist recommends it. Get them to show you what will happen if you don’t do it.
I had no clue about natural cures until 2 years ago….and now my family eats completely organic and we try and find every natural cure available. I am 43 and have always had great teeth…no cavities. Until several years ago – the dentist said I had like 12 cavities. I had to get them all filled (not mercury). Then I had 2 root canals. The tooth with the root canal broke off and now I have a hole but can feel part of the tooth in it. They want me to get a bridge or extract it. Any thoughts? I can’t figure out what is the best natural thing to do!!
I would recommend the book Cure Tooth Decay. It covers the diet that is necessary to preserve tooth health from childhood to old age.
Recipe for Remedy for tooth repair have a tooth that I’ve been told that needs a root canal and I wouldn’t want to do that. Can you help?

Has anyone had an infection in the jaw bone? I had a toot pulled years ago and it wasn’t cleaned out properly, I’m not sure if there was still infection in the extracted area. Then the tooth next to it started to decay.. had a filling done that was big and ended up getting too close to the nerve, now Im told I need a root canal. The tooth that was extracted years ago still hurt in that area, always felt like the toot was still there and aching. Now I’m worried the infection spread into the jaw bone, maybe Osteomyelitis 🙁
Has anyone had this problem, if so how was it treated? Please help
Hi ,
Some thing similar here ,I I live in New Delhi , got one tooth root canaled done about seven years ago , on the tooth that has almost complete tooth structure , the tooth has to surgically removed in AUG 2105 , once it has fractured , before since its removal , I started having pain in one side of my sinuse ,eye, head , where the infected tooth was located in upper molar . I went to dentist , and said there is no relation between the symptoms and root canal ed tooth , meanwhile I got infected fractured tooth removed , and things got so better . but even after 2 months the tooth removal , 10% intensity of symptoms , still exists , as if some root is still attached in the socket ,
this time I went to a govt. hospital , where the dentists took the xray , and said that the complete root has been removed , and there is no reason for the symptoms ,
I feel , as if some sort of infection exists in the tooth socket .
I think traditional dentists have no solution to it , I did some yogic pranayams , and felt better .
pls. do share your experience .
Regards
I need root canals or crown and don,t have the money ,is anything I can do to safe my tooth
Hi everyone,
I hopeI can get some advice. I’ve read a lot of comments and gathered some informations but I feel a little confused from all the information I got.
I just went to dentist and they told me I have a lot of cavities. I brush my teeth regular so I was surprised. Anyway they already did couple of fillings. One of them was really big and they said if it starts to hurt I need to get root canal. I really can’t spend that much money right now and also I want to try cure my tooth instead of doing surgery.
Can you give me advice on what stuff should I buy? My tooth started to hurt and I believe it’s infected.
I saw people suggesting Cod Oil, cascara Flour, Oregano Oil, …I’m not sure where to start. I’m new at this sorts of medicine.
Please help.
We are all either in a state of re-mineralization, or de-mineralization. It’s as simple as that. If you are not getting enough fresh, whole food, chances are your body is not getting the minerals that it needs. Leafy greens, fresh fruit, celery, carrots, apples, etc. You get the picture. These foods supply the real minerals that we need. And herbs are really important. Making your own mineral tea is a good place to start….herbs such as nettle, comfrey leaf, alfalfa, red clover, lemonbalm, lemongrass, just to name a few, are rich in minerals…You can make a cold infusion of the herbs, just use filtered cool water and let them sit overnight …..If the weather is rather hot, put it in the refrigerator for the night. It’s real important to chew a lot, fresh things, such as apples, carrots, celery….chewing these things will keep your teeth strong. If you can add fresh wheat grass to your diet, all the better. There should be lots of information on this type of lifestyle, and keeping your teeth in good shape.
What do you use the cold infusion for? Do you gargle with it? Drink it? I have lemon balm growing outside. Do you use one of those listed or more?
I had the metal taken out of the left side of my mouth and now have a tooth hurting that has a temporary crown on the bottom left side. Do you think I can heal that? It causes a pulsing pain.
The idea of arnica appeals to me. Do you know anything about details on how to do that?
Check out drellie.com Use this system. You can also check out drecoaching.com Same dentist.
Sounds to me like he owes you some clients. It’s pretty cool that it worked so well. That is definitely preferable to having a root canal.
I live in Orange County California. Can anyone recommend a truly holistic dentist in southern Calif? A lot of dentist say there holistic but there not! Caveat.
Did you ever find one? I’m in the same area.
PLEASE HELP
I brought my daughter in for a gum abscess above her front tooth that she has trauma a few months back. They are saying only recommended treatment is antibiotics and extraction which she would have to be put to sleep (she’s only 2 years old). The tooth looks slightly discolored but not completely dead. Is there any hope to not go this route? Would you take this route? Or still follow the homeopathic treatment in the article for an infected abscess. I have never done any conventional medicine on her and this is horrifying to me. Please any suggestions or hope are greatly appreciated
Also, you didn’t mention how much of arnica or hypericum to use. I bought the pellets from sprouts. Should she take it orally or I just rub them topically to tooth? I bought the 6c which they told me was the strongest
Hi! I’m in the same situation with my two year old daughter. What did you end up doing?
