When I wrote the post about how to heal a cavity, I had no idea that the post would end up being circulated around dental forums where it became the target of ridicule and even anger from a number disbelieving dentists. The fact is that teeth can and do heal, even those in need of a root canal.
Whether or not conventional dentists choose to acknowledge it does not really matter. Holistic dentists know the truth! For example, Dr. Weston A. Price DDS documented many cases of cavities resolving when nutritional deficiencies were corrected in his book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration.
While I received many negative emails and comments from dentists (I also received a few positive emails from dentists, I might add), I was also delighted and amazed by stories from Moms just like me who had experiences very similar to my own…tooth problems resolving with nutrition or natural medicine alone!
One of the most interesting emails I received was from a homeopath named Kay, who lives in Australia, coincidentally right near where my husband was raised! Kay wrote me the following story which I thought so fascinating that it absolutely needed to be a guest post:
Homeopathy Instead of a Root Canal
Dear Sarah,
My sister who lives in Hong Kong sent me the link to your site after you wrote an article about butter oil and how it reversed tooth decay when taken along with cod liver oil.
I am a homeopath and teach workshops to parents on how to use natural medicine to raise healthy children, so I was fascinated by this piece of information and it prompted me to share another tooth story with you and your readers about how my son was saved from a root canal at the age of 14 years old by using natural medicine.
Jack had been playing golf with his brother over the school holidays and while hot tired and emotional ( a normal state of affairs for my son at the time), his golf club got stuck in the bag. So, with sheer brute force, he ripped it out of the bag straight into his mouth and broke off the bottom of his front tooth!
We went straight to the dentist who did tests and declared the root was dying and that he needed to do a root canal before the tooth discolored. I told him to remove his drill from my son’s mouth and said I would try and save the tooth with homeopathy. A not very happy dentist told me there was a time and place for homeopathy and this wasn’t it and if there was any remote chance I could save this tooth he would send me all his clients.
I took Jack home and gave him homeopathic Arnica for shock, trauma and bruising. Then, I used homeopathic hypericum, a great remedy every parent should know about as it repairs nerve damage. I gave it to Jack every few hours and then reduced it to 2 x day for the next week. In America I believe you can buy homeopathics in health food stores quite easily, so always have arnica and hypericum in your cupboard for “teeth” accidents.
Today Jack still has his original front tooth with a little cosmetic dentistry to build up the bottom half and the dentist still has not sent me one client!
Thanks for letting me share this story Sarah. Just knowing these small pieces of information can create such better health outcomes for our children and families.

Hey Sarah,
I have read your blog for sometime now, and have read all your posts AND comments on cavities MULTIPLE times!!! My 5 year old went to the dentist and he discovered a LARGE cavity in her top molar tooth. Some decay was even spreading to the neighboring tooth. I started her on the FCLO and lots of raw dairy and completely eliminated grains thanks to the Cure Tooth Decay Book. We went back to the dentist a months later. The neighboring tooth’s cavity was almost gone, almost completely healed- awesome! But the dentist (who was chatting with me about W.A. Price and the importance of raw milk- very cool to have a dentist on board!) said that he still recommended extracting the tooth with the large cavity. My daughter doesn’t complain of pain with the large cavity tooth but the hole is still there and visible and I am torn with what to do. Is there permanent damage that can be done if I leave it alone? How do I deal with the “food trap” that the large cavity has become?? I feel like Ramiel’s book said not to leave a large cavity unfilled??? Any thoughts on whether to do a “no drill filling” versus extracting the tooth would be greatly appreciated. Man, this motherhood thing is a journey! I so appreciate your time and efforts in helping us think through healthy living!
Andrea, I wish I had seen your questions before. When my daughter was 6 years old, she had a piece of a molar break off. Right between the molar and the tooth in front of it. There was no black, just hollow. I took her to the dentist and they couldn’t believe how clean the hole was. They said that the other 3 molars, the one across on top, and the two on bottom directly below, all had shadows in them indicating that they also had holes in them, and they predicted that all three of the other teeth would break as this one had, unless I took her to a pediatric dentist and had them fill the teeth AND cap them! They lose those particular baby teeth somewhere between 10 and 12 years of age. So, they tried to convince me that she would have years of pain and tooth breakage if I didn’t do this. I already had Ramiel’s book! So I went home and put her on the protocol. I never brought her back to any dentist. She is 14 now, and that tooth that was broken was the very last one to come out of her mouth! Stubborn thing it was! It never decayed any further, but did come out in pieces, although it didn’t bother her because her permanent tooth was already pushing out. One of the other teeth, as it was loose and coming out, did break in half and come out in pieces too. But she never had any pain from any of her teeth, and she wasn’t made to go through the torment and fear of dental procedures. I do not regret the decision I made! If your daughter’s tooth is still there, I would recommend leaving it alone if it doesn’t bother her. If the hole is large and is hard to keep clean, I might consider having it filled … IF I found a dentist I trusted. That is the ongoing problem I have … finding one I can trust!
I am new to this….but I need help!!! I had chemotherapy for a little over a year, cancer is gone, thank God!!! But, so are my gums!! down to the bone. I am only 33 & don’t want to lose my teeth!!! Is there anyway to regenerate gum growth? I bought a water pic and a sonic care toothbrush, as I was told those were 2 good products to improve my gums, but are there any oils I should be using? Special toothpase? (Dentist has me on sensadine, but I want to go natural) ANything to put in water pic when I use it? Any help, please email me!!!
Wrong email address, hope I still get replies!!!! Changed it now

instead of toothpaste
I’ve read that taking CoQ10, Vitamin C, and Lysine supplements may help with gum regrowth,
I have need of this tooth saving remedy but I’m wondering if it’s safe to take hypericum with antidepressants (cymbalta) and if so, what dosage did you give every two hours? Thanks so much!
Homeopathic Hypericum tablets all is simply a sugar pill with the “energy” (essence) of the herb/plant in it. It cannot interfere with any medication. You may take 6-8 every 3 hours, or just read the label on the bottle. You do not have to worry about taking too much. I see this is an old post but it may help someone else.
Good luck with this remedy. If the nerve is not too damaged it may help, and will help some with the pain temporarily in any case.
In the middle of my own “great tooth experiment”. Pretty sure everyone around me thinks Im nuts.
Went to the dentist after fourth baby and found out I had 7 cavities with one cavity being 90% chance of needing a root canal. My teeth were also full of plaque and gums bleeding and inflamed.
It was the kick I needed to eat more than coffee and snacks all day. So since then I eat mostly grain/sugar or sweetener free. I do have popcorn 1/wk and once a month I have been cheating with a couple squares of chocolate. Also I restricted fruit for first two months but don’t anymore.
I also eat liver, natto, butter oil.cod liver oil, magnesium pills and vit d. I chew xylitol gum throughout day and use tooth salts ( fluoride and calc) daily. Occasionally swish with h2o2.
In three months I will go back and get re-x-rayed.
I hope to update you then.
If nothing else I have gained 10 lbs muscle, lost inches on my waist and my gums and teeth are beautiful. No more bleeding or inflammation. No pain. Fingers crossed.
Can’t wait to see update!!
Great post! With kids this is something good to know and I will definitely add these to my cabinet. I have a question… It’s amazing how you cured your sons cavity naturally! It amazes me. Recently I’ve been having some aching pain in one of my tooth. I had my husband look at it and see if he could see any holes and he couldn’t. The toot that I feel pain on already has a filling. How do I tell if it’s a cavity that I have or a root canal. I want to cure it naturally I just not sure what to cure for. Thanks for your time, 🙂
Go to a dentist get them to do the cold test where they put a cold cottonwool on your tooth if you don’t feel any pain it means the tooth is dead and you’ll need a root canal (or extraction the better option). Also they can do an x-ray and tell if the tooth was dead the pulp will show up as darker if dead.
Although I’ve lost confidence with dentist useful to go to dentists for to diagnose the state of your tooth of course you have to be very weary of getting their advice.
To clarify you have to be weary of letting them operate on your teeth whether a filling or especially a root canal.
Thanks for your encouraging story. My personal experience with root canal is that it just open a can of the worms. I was told by the dentist recently I got 11 teeth needs to be filling. I thought I really look after my teeth from 8 years ago. But I developed most problems than anytime of my life. I was horrified as I think there must be something not right, what dentists told me the way I should do about my teeth appears not working. Then I noticed that the teeth next to the teeth done the root canal all are the one developed badly. After I did research, I can see that the teeth with root canal is very easy to keep bacteria as it can’t fight with bacterial as health teeth with blood circulated.
I also remembered when I was in primary school, once there was a free exam on teeth from some clinic. I was refused to be fixed on my teeth as I had too many teeth needing filling. I was sad but didn’t really think about it. During my middle school I was bad on my teeth, eating hard beans, lots of candies. But my first teeth filling was done when I was 25 years old and only one tooth. Then I start to look after my teeth, floss, brush my teeth twice a day, mouth wash. Done all the filling and root canal. Clean teeth every 6 months. After all this I felt so disappointed. Now I like take things in my own hand, I did research and I had following findings:
1. While dental hygiene is always important, but what dental told you is not all the truth. Sometimes they just treated the results instead of the cause. Eg. There is water leaking in the cabinet, the wooden start to rotten. The dentist just cut the rotten wood and you think the cabinet is fine and find later the cabinet rotten again. They leave you to do the maintenance with their instruction. But there are more on the maintenance as the traditional maintenance don’t work 100%. Natural oil or sea salt has something working more than mouth wash.
2. Root canal is bad it kills any chance your teeth being saved and it creates more problem later on than your own nature teeth. As it is a dead teeth, the stuff they used is also poison, silent killer. You can save your teeth by alternative natural ways.
3.One book very opens my eyes are: Cure Tooth Decay. It emphasis on diets and some nature healing ways.
Hi, I am very intrigued by this. I am becoming more interested in treating my body the natural healthy way, and I am afraid I might need a root canal on my one tooth. I currently believe it is abscessed and I am in an incredible amount of pain. What is the recommended ratio of whatever it was you said you used. I am desperately trying to avoid another root canal. It is so expensive. Any help would be very much appreciated.
i think you need to take these.
Arnica – every 2 hours
hypericum – every 2 hours
additional things which are a must.
Dr Christophers Hot Cayenne Pepper Tincture – take lots of drops every day, these revive blood flow around thebody
Green Black Wallnut Hull tincture – take lots of drops every day, these heal teeth and kill off bacteria
Echinacea – take drops every day, these prevents infection and should heal.
Green pasture fermented cod liver oil – take this every day- a must have
Green pasture fermented butter oil – take this also, although you may prefer standard butter or ghee instead
Other useful things i found.
Dr Schulze’s tooth and gum formula – kills of infection/bacteria
Dr Schulze’s intestinal formula 2 (powder). use this on the gums to kill off abscess and draw out any puss
Calcium Flouride homeopathic tablets
Hephar Sulph homeopathic tablets
Horsetail Tea – drink this, very good for silica source
Cut out all grains, sugar, you can eat honey, but dont eat grains, cut them all out, that means breads, cereals etc.
another few great things to get/use
Coloidal silver (spray or liquid), take this internally, kills off bacteria
Magnesium oil (swansons or ancient minerals brands) , take this internally, restores enamel and gives minerals we are missing.
Monosodium Phosphate – apparently builds enamel back up on teeth
and lastly, ultrasound at 1.5mhz can revive or regrow teeth as proven (just search youtube).
now there is no device currently on the market which will fit in your mouth, but any ultrasound massager which can do 1.5mhz or similar could still be used. Just put in the mouth over the tooth and it should help revive it.
I’m currently going to try to revive a supposed “dead” tooth using ultrasound and see if the nerve can revive.
I was wondering how your ultrasound is going with reviving your tooth?
Went to a holistic dentist, with digital xray it shows the back molar is dead with no connecting nerve. I don’t believe doing a root canal, since the tooth stays dead and eventually will cause more problems. DID THE ULTRASOUND WORK?????
I want to know too!!!! I have a supposedly dead tooth as well and I would do anything to try to revive it!
How much hypericum do you take for nerve trauma? Is it taken orally?
My dentist says I need root canals on both front teeth. I have a HUGE filling on one of them that’s very loose, and very small bumps (abscesses on both of them). I pop them on my own and it’s very small. I’m not sure if I really need root canals because I don’t think the teeth are dead but I don’t know much about the subject. I’m in no pain but the slipped filling is ANNOYING. Is there a way to heal the nerves instead of just taking them out? I know that many root canals don’t last long and people get infections after they’re done so I’m trying to find the best alternative. I’m going to try rinsing with salt and baking soda, and applying oil of oregano, clove oil and maybe olive oil but something is telling me a root canal isn’t it for me.
Yes, homeopathic remedies are great. I’ve used them, and still use occasionally – mostly my son does. I purchased 200 dilutions – this way, you take them only twice a day – in the morning and at night, instead of 15’s and 30’s.
However, many times I prefer high quality therapeutic grade essential oils, because they’re more effective, especially if you drink caffeinated drinks for example.
I also saved my root canal already twice! In fact, I tried homeopathic remedies the 2nd time, and they did not help me. Not that I am putting them down. I’ve used them on my family many times, and still have a full draw of different ones. They are most effective if taken right away after the injury, etc.
