One of the most popular articles on this site is how I healed my child’s cavity using the protocol recommended by Dr. Weston A. Price DDS, a dentist who penned the incredible book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration back in the 1930s.
Granted, the cavity I healed was an early cavity .. it was a hole in one of my child’s top front incisors and it filled in within weeks to be as smooth as the teeth next to it.
But what about a tooth with a really bad cavity? What if the cavity has actually eaten into the pulp of the tooth and your dentist recommends a root canal?
Guess what? You can save these teeth too.
The protocol for healing teeth even in such a state of complete degeneration is described in the book Cure Tooth Decay by Rami Nagel. This article on saving damaged teeth without a root canal provides a compelling testimonial of this approach.
I had the privilege of talking to Rami personally at the Wise Traditions Conference last year.
I have no doubt that our conversation helped to enable me to heal my child’s cavity some months later and write about it hopefully helping thousands of people in the process do the exact same thing.
Watch this video featuring Rami Nagel which describes the diet required to avoid and heal teeth at risk for a root canal. Even teeth that are in need of an immediate root canal can be helped.
If you have teeth in such a severe state of decay and think there is no hope, think again. Proper, traditionally based nutrition can work wonders even in these types of situations where the teeth need root canals. Make sure you listen through the whole video to be sure you understand Rami’s description of all aspects of the diet required to heal root canal teeth. It’s much more involved than taking a couple of supplements. There is no quick fix.
In addition, the diet required to heal the root canal teeth needs to be continued so that the problem does not re-emerge in the future.

Hello i just have a question, i already had a root canal but never went back for the crown, if i start taking the butter oil and fermented cod liver oil in my diet will the nutrients be able to reach my tooth even though it had a root canal?

Dead tooth options? If a tooth tests as dead (as per endodontist cold and electrical tests) is black, large rotting decay having reached the nerve on xray, is it hopeless to do anything but have it extracted? I’ve been to 2 “holistic” dentists. One wants to do a root canal the other one said it must be extracted. I would like to do ozone, remove all possible decay, fill with ZOE zinc oxide clove temp filling and see what happens before a permanent extraction. But neither dentist is game for that idea.

If the tooth is already dead it should be removed and replaced with an implant of some kind. Here are the safe options considered by biological dentists. https://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/dental-implants/
Keeping dead tissue intact within the body is a recipe for low grade infection 24/7 and the development of chronic disease. The lower price of a root canal is NOT worth it over the long term.

Sarah, hi 🙂 I just have some quick questions I hope you’ll respond to… I read through this whole post and how your son’s cavity healed even though he didn’t go completely off grains and even ate some sugary Easter candy from school. You had him eating the raw butter on toast each morning. I am curious what type of bread was the toast made from? (was it low in phytates or soaked or something?) I noticed one little tan-colored spot on my son’s molar, and I have been pretty stingy about him not eating wheat or oatmeal or much nuts fsince I found this spot. Maybe this is unneccesary? I saw your video about soaking oatmeal, which is how we have eaten it for around a year now, (until I saw the spot on my sons molar) but I’ve heard that even when soaked 24 hours, oats still have such a high phytate level that people trying to remineralize their teeth should avoid oats completely. What are your thoughts? And did your son eat any oatmeal during the time his cavity remineralized? I am so looking forward to your reply! 🙂

I am allergic to fish. I would LOVE to add FCLO to my diet. I drink a lot of raw milk (and make butter), like liver and make broth. Is this enough to heal my teeth?

As a dental hygienist for 35 years and a nutritional therapist, I have done this with my daughter just recently. Though, I ended up finding a dentist who would do the ozone therapy to the head and area above the root along with the nutrition. She never had a root canal and we saw the dentist today as she gave her story to a bunch of dentists at his office and there is not sign of cyanotic tissue nor that there was ever an abscess. I did say to Ramiel he ought to consult with me as some of the dental info is not quite right and he said he would on his next book.HA HA My daughter is 18 and I did not want to have this effect the rest of her life. By the way the dentist has learned alot from this also. Though he was open to it and there was no indication that this should have ever happened though, her tooth remineralized the pulp showed no indication of the cavity actually reaching the pulp.

I drive 3 hours to get to my holistic dentist and would happily drive four. He’s saved two of my teeth when three other dentists said I “had” to have a root canal.

I guess there’s no solution for vegetarians then? I ruined my teeth through drinking soda some years ago and then morning sickness.

Sarah I have a root canal on my back last molar and I’ve been told if I remove it it will cause my other teeth to shift and become slanted. The last time I was at a dentist i told my dentist i wanted it removed. she told me that it was a perfect root canal and she was not going to remove it for me. Instead she removed my wisdom teeth that we’re pressing agaisnt my root canaled molar causing pain. So I’m Desperat I’m certain that the root canal is causing swollen lymph glads and a constant infection. No more pain, but I feel like I have problems with my ears and sinuses on that side because of it. What can you do if it’s the last molar?? Because r implants not bad to?? I would rly like to remove it.

@Laura ask around to friends who are holistically minded. They are still few and far between unfortunately.

How did your husband reverse his root canals? By going to see a holistic dentist? Would you mind telling me approximately how much it would cost to reverse each root canal? I’m on the GAPS diet for my Crohn’s disease now, so I eat a strictly traditional diet, but I have had a lot of work done on my teeth in the past… including an extraction and the base for a new tooth to be put in. :/ How bad is that for me?? 🙁
Sarah, TheHealthyHomeEconomist
Once a root canal is put in, there is nothing that can be done but take out the whole tooth and put in an artificial tooth.
This post is talking about healing teeth BEFORE the root canal is put in.
Abi
Oh sorry, maybe I misunderstood your facebook post. You said your husband had his root canals removed, so I guess you mean the whole tooth was removed?
Dana
What if the root canal need is not due to a cavity … but from “irreversible pulpitis” (which I understand to be a damaged/traumatized nerve/pulp) and a tooth with a large chip out of it? I don’t have a cavity to be healed. About a fourth of my tooth chipped off and it was repaired with bonding but the pulp is damaged … Thanks!!!
Nathalie
What did you end up doing with your pulpitis?
