It’s hump day! We are halfway done with The 10-Day Milk Cure!
Are any of you still detoxing or have those symptoms gone away and you are now feeling terrific?
Any cravings or hunger?
Be sure to clue us all in via the comments section…
Paula: Crashed on my couch last night at 7:30 pm and slept clean through until 6 am. I usually sleep pretty well but it has been most improved and more “restful” since starting this fast. Digestion is usually good with gas and bloating typically minimal or after foods that are rarely eaten but it is nonexistent on this fast. No headaches, blemishes, or issues with constipation thus far. ‘I’m feeling good and energy still higher than usual. That’’s actually kind of scary if you know me.
I am still thinking the increased carbohydrates have something to do with this and will continue to experiment after the fast. Like I said I am a numbers girl. The first 4 days of the fast my calories have ranged from 2183-2663 and I am down 2 lbs although it could be from the heat yesterday and slightly reduced consumption.
Consumed 13 cups and weighed in at 116.6.
Richard: Played soccer really hard all afternoon. Had plenty of energy and the full speed running wasn’t a problem.
My joints and muscles feel fantastic. Drank about 5 cups again for the day in addition to 2 cups herbal tea and homemade kombucha. Sleeping great and everything is normal. I haven’t had any detox symptoms at all other than a bit of weakness/shakiness and some mild congestion the first couple of days.
Sarah: Felt terrific all day long. Didn’t nap and wasn’t hungry except for when I grilled up some grassfed burgers for the kids. The meat juice in the pan looked so tempting. I almost poured it straight into my mouth!
Had a small hive about the size of a dime appear just to the left of my left eye yesterday. No other hives appeared and it went away after a few hours. Strange. I haven’t had hives in decades. Perhaps more detoxing?
Forgot to mention that I sunned my belly again yesterday for about 20 minutes. I swear this helps keep my tummy flat. Have been doing this for years although the data is still very preliminary about the internal benefits to the body of direct sun.
I drank a full gallon of raw milk today as I really seemed to need it. Am trying to finish drinking earlier at night as having to get up to go to the bathroom at night from all the liquids is a bit annoying.
Weighed in again and am holding steady at 123. Woo-hoo! I think I’m going to make it!
Mary Kate
Day 5 woke up feeling o.k. Had the kids make their own breakfast and was out the door for a little “field trip” I did forget my milk, but drank water instead. When I finally got home I guzzled down a glass right away! It was still cold, yummy going down! Later I still had good energy and was fixing dinner and trying to finish up the apple sauce I was making for the kids and started not feeling so hot.
I had to use my machine and my inhaler a few times. 🙁 Took it easy the rest of the night, husband and children were a little worried. No ER visit though and I went to bed with some water at the night stand. Slept pretty good, not like the other nights. But, my skin is looking GREAT!! I may look like a teenager by the time I am done here! LOL
I know Day 6 will be BETTER then Day 5
Thank you for my hug Sarah!! I needed that. You are hoot!! I can picture you looking around to see if anyone is looking and sneak a sip of those juices from the burgers..hee hee.
You are looking GREAT as well!!
Sarah, TheHealthyHomeEconomist
Mary Kate, I’ve never seen your eyes looking as clear and bright as they did this morning. There is clearly less of a physical burden on you and it shows!
Ash
Mary Kate- just wondering if you have cf? I have seen your comments and there are some buzzwords that stood out… If so I would love to hear more about your management of it and how the milk fast worked for you.

Wendy, just the idea of chasing milk with lemon juice makes me feel queasy! Tried putting both in tea at a restaurant once since they both arrived with the hot water. Instant curdle! But maybe you know something I don’t!
My update- Girl Scout cookies arrived in the mail yesterday! Talk about temptation! My friend promises me if I eat real food long enough they will lose their appeal. Hard to believe but that would be a good thing. Hunger pains about 9pm weren’t squelched by more milk so I gave in and had an avocado. Figured it was still better than a box of cookies! Back on the wagon today!
Unconventional Survivor
Your friend is right about GS cookies (and Pepperidge Farms, et al) losing their appeal. Many years ago a friend gave me Thin Mint Cookies for my early winter birthday that she had frozen in March for me…she knew the way to my heart at the time! It’s something you hear people say, but experiencing it is nothing short of a rather miraculous feeling for those of us who have “walked away.”
I think an avocado was a great choice! Maybe it was extra fat you needed?
Kate S.
I’ve noticed, too, over the years many junk foods have lost their appeal. Sometimes, I still get tempted but the way I feel after eating them (physically, not just mental guilt) is enough to get me to not do it again. Maybe it is just being pregnant, but it seems when I walk through grocery stores and see that aisles and aisles of garbage foods, I literally feel sick to my stomach.
I can taste MSG, artificial sweeteners and canola oil a mile away. It is getting hard to eat out and eat at other people’s houses. I hate to be rude and turn down their food or their invitations, but all the fake foods out there are gag inducing.
Linda
I so agree with you on this . Watching people in restaurants is really getting sickening. And also the food in stores . It does make me want to gag also . I know exactly how you feel. And i have no idea how to deal with friends and family .

My Day 3 – Have had full energy every day so far, drinking a cup of milk on the hour. Went to Crossfit on Day 2, and did not even have to add any extra calories than my half gallon per day. So Day 3 I believe I went a cup or two under the 2 quarts. I do want to lose a few pounds. My Day 3 also included a detox bath with a mixture of sea salts, epsom salts, and baking soda. I haven’t indulged in a bath in years. Tucked myself into bed for awhile afterward, taking advantage of a quiet day with all souls missing but myself. Also made a scrumptious chicken dinner for the family. I was afraid I would accidentally eat something! I made a batch of microwave yogurt yesterday that should be ready for today, and ordered some kefir grains as well.

After reading your posts, I have decided to do a milk fast. Can I still drink my whole raw Kefir or should I give that up during the fast?
Sarah, TheHealthyHomeEconomist
Whole raw kefir is fine on The Milk Cure. Just no sweeteners or fruit added to it.

Day 6 here for me. Feeling great and sleeping much better than normal. I feel like I have tons of energy and have been taking the dog for a walk the last two days while the weather is nicer. For the record, I am overweight and gained the majority of my weight after my hysterectomy in 2010 then foot surgery three months after. Ever since those surgeries my legs get achy and tired if I walk too long. However, these past two days walking at a good pace, I’ve gone over a mile and up our steep hill to the house without getting winded. That is NOT normal for me. Last night, my husband didn’t wear his jacket to bible study and decided to jog back to our house. I was cold and started to jog with him. Once again, I didn’t get winded. This is something I don’t understand? Why would this change something so drastically? I’m still overweight and out of shape but I feel so much better. Is that it? If this is how it’s going to be, I don’t know if I will stop the milk cure in 10 days. I may go longer.
Oh, I’m down another pound, to a number I haven’t seen in a long time.
Blessings
Rachel
This is interesting to me because I am having the same experience! I am on day 8 and have lost 6 pounds but still have many pounds to lose. But I discovered yesterday that I can run quite a long time without getting winded! Love it! I plan to go running again tonight.
Christine E.
I’m glad I’m not alone in this. I thought I was imagining it.
Wendy Haught
Day 5 was good for me. I continue to lose weight, which is good, and my energy is increasing. I have lost 3.8 pounds. I am going to try drinking some lemon juice for the queasiness I frequently get after drinking the milk on an empty stomach. I am trying to post more detailed accounts of my day-to-day milk fasting experience on my blog but will comment here when I have time.
Linda
Loving reading all your comments !

Sarah, thank you so much for the update on Von Hershberger. I have been looking on the internet trying to find updates but had not found any for his portion of it. I saw something about there not being any oath on record for the judge, but that was it. Just another question for folks on the fast. How do you feel about Traditional Medicine’s Smooth Move Laxative herbal tea for those who might squeamish about enemas? I almost expecting to find that there is something in there that shouldn’t be! In about a year when I have weaned my baby I will be trying the milk fast. I waited 8 years for her. I am in no hurry to wean her (she is only 6 months right now).
Sarah
oops, it is Vernon Hershberger. Maybe that is the reason I was having trouble locating much information! Grrrr….pay attention.
Sarah, TheHealthyHomeEconomist
Nurse away!!! I nursed by youngest until she self weaned at 3 1/2. Nursing ROCKS! Go as long as you can and cherish every minute.

unrelated.. but i was in another argument last night with a mid-50’s male taking about 15 pills every day.. I tried to explain the dangers of each pill which led to him pull the “people are living longer than ever.. People died in their 50’s a century ago”, card.. I went in to my little speech but realized I’ve been stumpped here before.. I know as a country we live nowhere the longest and are nowhere near the happiest but I’m not sure where we stood 100 years ago as far as life expectancy and what would be a good way through this.. My gut tells me that taking 15 pills each and every day and being married to 3 scheduled doctor visits per month cant be normal but I do get stumpped here.. So, anybody.. What do we say to this argument..
Stumpped 20 somethings,

The people who were dying young were in the overcrowded, filthy cities where decent food was hard to find fresh from the farm. People living out on the farms lived long and well. The people who are living long now are those born pre WWII. Those born after are getting sick/dying much earlier. How may older parents are burying their children in their 40’s and 50’s these days? A LOT
Sarah, TheHealthyHomeEconomist
Just had a high school friend die last week (just turned 50). His parents probably never thought they would outlive their child. Very sad.
jason and lisa
actually, i read once that i was part of the first generation in history that was expected NOT to out live their parents..

I would say the reason that the pre WWII folks are living longer is because, even if they ended their life with junk food, they began it most likely on raw milk, good quality meats, and lots of fresh air and “drity” veggies from unpolluted fields (giving them a wonderfully, nourishing start). This diet changes dramatically for their children. Dr. price says it take one generation either to or from a healthy diet to make a difference.

Hi Jason and Lisa,
My dad, who is 76, tries to pull that card with me as well. Thanks to the V.A. Hospital he is on about 6 different meds, his immune system is poor–he catches everything, he cannot stay awake in the afternoons not to mention all the side effects from the meds that he experiences. He just got over a bout with hives due to the antibiotics they had him on! But I believe that one of the reasons we are living longer is due to the improvement in sanitary conditions. And what about their quality of life? My mother, who is 73, takes much better care of herself, is at ideal weight and still works a full time job!
jason and lisa
thanks terrie and sarah..great points..

I believe that the supposed increase in life span is due to the fact that infant mortality has decreased. When gov. does their figuring, it includes death of children, since we don’t have as many children dieing under the age of 5, that increases the over all life span of the total population. My husband tries to pull the same trick on me.

As an anthro major, many anthropologists believe that the human body has always had the ability to live “near” 100. Like Sarah says below, high mortality rate at birth, most likely due to poor sanitation, skewed statistics. Other factors such as infectious disease and the inability to fight it off, poor living conditions that include poor sources of food contribute to early death. The point is that the human body, and specifically homo sapien though probably not as far back as homo habilis (though some don’t consider this human), has never “worn out” endig in death in the ages of 40’s to 50’s and even 70’s. If given proper nutrition, living conditions and reduction of being eaten by a predatory animal, the human body has the ability to last quite long. I would cite my source with the anthropologists that support this line of thinking, but we lost our home due to the bad economy and most of my books are packed in storage.

Jason and Lisa, both my great grandfather and my grandfather, lived to be 102. Both great grandmother and grandmother lived to be 96. I think most of the statistics to cause the difference in life expectancy between then and now was due to infant mortality and less sanitary living conditions. However being too clean is also a problem. A little dirt and germs is good for the immune system.
Both my parents are still alive at 87 but are not as healthy as their parents were at the same age. I am 62 and not as healthy as my parents were at my age despite my best efforts in following a healthy diet. Some things seem to be out of our control and I hope things will turn around with the new food movements.
Kathy
My Icelandic grandmother lived to 102 and her father 100. She outlived 2 of her children by many, many years. My maternal grandfather died of a heart attack at 70. My mother is 85, looks 75 but has physical issues my grandmother/her mother never had even though my grandmother abused alcohol and anti-depressants for many years. My mother abused sugar most of her life, she says she is off it now.
My fathers side of the family is a different matter all together, his father died when I was only 2 and his brother fairly young also, both from heart attacks. My father died of a heart attack 4 years ago at 85.
I am 60 and feel pretty good except for joint stiffness. I don’t plan on taking any medications if at all possible. My mother takes only 2 as she has a serious case of fibromyalgia.
My daughter is only 28, is very over weight and eats very poorly, lots of processed ‘food’, lots of junk. I shudder to think what she will feed my grandchildren, if she has any.

actually.. cant believe i have never thought of this before.. my great grandmother lived to 99 and all of her 11 children are still alive today and in their upper 70’s with pretty healthy spirits and lifestyles.. they all worked the farm earlier in life and branched out in their 20’s.. not one of them struggles with weight or any real health problems and my great grandmothers “carefree” spirit was passed to each of her children.. i really cannot believe i have never thought of that..

I can’t believe we’re more than half way done! I feel great. My skin continues to look better and better. I’m still suffering from mild constipation and mild congestion, but I’m not too worried. I think my hair might be “shedding” less, too! I’m up by 0.2 lbs, but I don’t mind gaining a little weight. I should try to continue to increase my milk consumption, too, to help with the constipation. My energy is good and I find my attitude is great! Keep at it, everyone! We can do this!
